Carmarthenshire County Council which manages Carmarthen Leisure Centre had commissioned the reconstruction of the centre’s 15 year old hockey pitch. This significant development was one of a number of investments made by the council into developing facilities operated under the Actif Sport and Leisure brand.
Sub base remedial works
PST Sport worked closely with our client to determine a solution for the base reconstruction due to underlying stability issues. What is below the pitch surface is often overlooked but crucial to the successful life cycle of any playing surface.
Upon removing the existing hockey pitch surface it was clear that the base was not fit for purpose and an engineered solution was necessary. PST Sport carried out an extensive site survey to assess the nature of the ground underneath. This allowed us to implement a cost effective plan to remedy all sub base defects. This process added time and budget to the project but was necessary to deliver a pitch base that would stand up to future years of use.

New pitch surface – FastPro 18 hockey carpet
PST Sport’s surfacing solution was to lay a 15mm insitu pad before laying our FASTPro 18 hockey surface. Featuring hard wearing, curly PE fibres, FastPro 18 is dressed with selected, small, rounded, clean sand, to provide a stable, attractive and long lasting hockey pitch offering exceptional ball speed and uniformity as well as enhanced durability.

The finished surface was tested and certified to FIH National standard. PST Sport are retained to maintain the playing surface for the next 3 years ensuring compliance with the FIH National Standards.A
Ancillary works
Additional fencing and goal storage areas were constructed to allow safe use of the facility for multiple sports. The project also included the supply and installation of additional stone and tarmac to extended area, new light bases and ducting, 1.2m spectator rails and 4.5m rebound fencing
This new pitch will offer people a world-class facility to enjoy in all weathers, throughout the day and evening; and will be open for hire by the public, clubs, schools and others for soccer, hockey and a range of sports and activities.
